Geographic situation

On the foot of the Cantabrian Mountain range, in its leonine slope, a valley of great beauty extends by which a river known by the lovers of the fishing flows very well, the Curueño river. To speak of the Valley of the Curueño river is to speak of fishing, trouts, roosters, pens and flies.

The Curueño is born in Vegarada, surrounded by beechtree and hollytree. It begins to walk between rocks, and little by little it is taking water until arriving at a fishing preserve called "Tolibia". He continues his to run breaking through between the rocks until arriving at another fishing preserve, "Valdepielago". Of here for down, the mounts to both sides of rio with oak and holm oaks forests begin. The borders from the river to their passage by La Candana, located to about 1000 meters on the level of the sea, are of black poplar. Here, the bottom of the river has happened to be of rock to be of stone.

One of the most representative towns of all this tradition and passion by the fishing, it is La Candana de Curueño, a small town pertaining to the city council of La Vecilla. In order to arrive at La Candana it is possible to be gone by highway LE-311 from Leon to Robles de la Valcueva, where we will take the LE-626 towards the right until La Vecilla. From here we will descend the valley on a par that the river by the LE-313, stops after 3 kms. to arrive at our destiny.

It is worth the trouble to take the trip with tranquillity and to enjoy the beautiful landscapes. Waters down the Curueño river, near Ambasaguas de Curueño, contributes its waters to another river of the great trout prestige, the Porma river.

A way to live

The life of the people of these lands turns around the river. The people who lives by the river are servant to the border of the river, they have grown fishing precious trouts and they have inherited of the their parents the culture of the wet fly fishing. Many of them have maintained the tradition of the roosters breeding for the handcrafted preparation of the known leonine wet flies ones intact. The fame of these pens, exclusive rights of this region, is world-wide.

In La Candana, the good one for making and the meticulous work of the breeders of roosters have given rise to the purest races of "pardos" and "Indios". Single selecting and crossing the best units the best quality can be obtained. And a good example of this work is Jose Maria Gonzalez, known in the world of the fishing like Chema.

From always much has commented that is what does that the pen that the roosters of here have it is different from the rest. It can be by a uranium layer that happens below La Candana. Also by the water or by the peculiar climate of the zone. Very not often it is windy, since the town is in a valley and to the height of Valdepielago the mountain finishes which are like a wall and this has been causing that the zone has a special microclimate. Winter is very cold, but it is dry. The humidity is very bad for the roosters.

The region always has lived on ranching. Today in day, as in mayoria of the towns mainly, it stays people older, since youngs has had to go away by the lack of work. Those that has remained have been to have had the luck to find a job this way. After all the roosters are something alternative, and in the case of Chema it is a passion without which it could not live.
